Maltese international Jarrod Sammut is back with Workington Town for the 2024 League One season.
The Australia-born Sammut, who turns 37 next month, had left Barrow after two seasons with the Championship side and there was much speculation where he would end-up next.
Super League, Championship and League One clubs were interested in the talented half-back, dubbed the Maltese magician after some outstanding performances for the island’s international side.
Sammut enjoyed a very productive period at Town in 2015 whilst on loan and then after signing permanently in 2016 made 37 appearances and scored 33 tries as he became a huge fans favourite.
He then went on to play for Leigh, Wigan and London before his stint at Barrow Raiders and his career record shows a return of over 1700 points from just over 300 games to highlight the points potential he will bring to the Workington Town squad.
Sammut’s signing adds significant impact to Town’s preparations ahead of what is going to be very competitive 2024 Betfred League One and fuels the ambition of the club to be pushing at the top end of the table.
A Town spokesman said: “The signing has been made possible by a number of factors and the solid base the club has built on and off the field over the last 12 months has created a platform to build upon.
“The significant additional funding provided by the Blue Knights support group has enabled the club to proceed with confidence and we thank them and encourage any other like-minded supporters to join the group so we can continue to attract players to the club.
“We would also like to thank the 100 club and the 1945 club for their support in assisting squad building in 2024.
“Jarrod joined up with his new teammates and some familiar old faces when he trained tonight and with the highly anticipated Ike Southward Memorial Trophy in under two weeks time he is likely to come into consideration for that game.”
Sammut started his career in Australia with Penrith Panthers and in the UK also appeared for Crusaders, Bradford and Wakefield before his stints at Town.
