Wath Brow Hornets will be Cumbria’s only representatives in the fourth round of the Challenge Cup.
The National Conference side will travel to York Acorn in a fortnight after a convincing 30-4 win over fellow amateurs Stanningley.
For while the Hornets were able to make progress their professional neighbours from the county – Barrow, Whitehaven and Workington Town were all beaten over the week-end.
Wath Brow had to survive some strong early pressure from their West Yorkshire hosts before building a 16-4 lead by the interval.
Ian Rooney’s side went ahead after 24 minutes with a try in the corner from Sam Curwen after Peter Caddy had fed him from Dean Rooney’s break.
Three minutes later Wath Brow were in again. This time a Caddy break ended with skipper Fran King having enough strength to get over through three tacklers on the line. Cole Walker-Taylor put over the first of his five goals.
The Hornets blast wasn’t over as they scored a third try in the seven minute spell. It was Rooney who set-up Connor Molyneux for the touchdown.
The Hornets had Jake Moore sent to the sin bin for a high tackle three minutes before half-time and in his absence they conceded a try.
The ball was lost near their line and before a defender could react Dean Parker crossed for an unconverted try.
With Moore still in the bin, Stanningley had a strong spell to start the second-half but they couldn’t break a resolute Wath Brow defence.
That all changed on 61 minutes when the home side had Luke Townend sin-binned and Wath Brow finished them off.
Walker Taylor kicked the resultant penalty and Jake Pearce crossed a minute later.
Walker Taylor converted and then completed the victory by backing-up King to collect and score the final try. His conversion gave him 14 points on the day.
Wath Brow will now travel to York Acorn who produced a commendable performance to win 18-10 at League One side Cornwall.
