Volunteers from a Lake District mountain rescue team were called out on Valentine’s Day to help a stranded duo.

Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team were called at around 7.15pm to the pair who had reached the top of Swirral Edge before becoming unable to descend.

Team members struggled to make contact with the duo via phone – so three rescuers were sent to go directly to them.

But shortly after 7.15pm Cumbria Constabulary received a call from a parent of the duo who had intermittent live tracking data showing they had moved across the top of Helvellyn, descending to the coll before Striding Edge.

The team then diverted their rescue party to traverse Striding Edge instead of ascending Swirral Edge as originally planned.

Further team members were also called out to drive up the Grisedale valley and climb into Nethermost Cove from below, while the first rescue group descended from Striding Edge into the Cove from above.

Contact was finally made with the pair at 9.50pm well down towards the valley.

The pair were then escorted down to the team’s vehicles before being driven back to Patterdale’s rescue centre.

The incident lasted four and a half hours and involved nine team members.
