Kendal Town boss Jimmy Marshall admitted he was “fuming” after his side’s late defeat in the quarter finals of the Macron Cup.
Goals in the 83rd and 91st minutes turned things round for visitors Chadderton who won 3-2 to deny Kendal a repeat of last season’s semi-final appearance.
“We were the better side in the first half and the better side in the second half and did not deserve to lose that game.
“I thought we were very good for most of the game but it’s about what happens in both boxes. We give them a free header for the first; the second is a long range strike which takes a deflection and the third looked off-side.
“It was a cruel way to lose but we also had opportunities ourselves to have put the game to bed.
“Overall, though, I thought it was a good game and we played some good stuff. I was happy at that but fuming over the result,” said Marshall.
Chadderton had taken the lead after 26 minutes when Ethan Sutcliffe was left with a simple header, unmarked at the far post.
Great work from Steve Yawson provided James Bailey with a tap in for the equaliser right on the stroke of half-time.
Chadderton had a man sent to the sin bin early in the second half and during his absence Kendal gained the lead when Bailey was left with another simple finish after a spell of pinball in the visitors’ box.
Kendal should really have increased their lead on 67 minutes when Yawson was brought down in the box but the usually reliable Rob Wilson saw his spot kick saved.
It was to prove crucial as Chadderton equalised on 83 minutes when Adam Dale’s shot took a severe deflection and wrong-footed home keeper Chris Cheetham.
The tie was won at the start of added time when Connor Hughes grabbed a third for Chadderton with Kendal claiming offside.
The Mintcakes have a break now until next Saturday when the Isle of Man visit Parkside Road.
