An angry West Cumbrian driver who rammed a car containing his brothers after a violent family fallout has been given a 30-month prison sentence.
Trouble initially flared on the afternoon of September 28 2022 at an address in Workington.
Carlisle Crown Court heard the flashpoint was that 32-year-old Jared Deakin was alleged to have been having an affair with a woman who had only recently broken up with one of his brothers.
During a fight, the two men exchanged blows and struck each other with the metal tube of a vacuum cleaner. This item was then used to smash the rear windscreen of Deakin’s Volkswagen Polo.
Three brothers got into a Citroen vehicle which drove off. Meanwhile Deakin, said prosecutor Andrew Evans, could be heard roaring and saying “it’s not over and I’m going to kill you”.
“He walks through the smashed glass at the rear of the car, gets in the driver’s seat and sets off at speed,” said Mr Evans.
A witness then saw the Polo driven by Deakin drifting and screeching around a corner in pursuit of the brothers’ vehicle at high speed. “He watched as the Polo drove into the back of the Citroen, flipping it over,” said the prosecutor.
Deakin was said to have an expression of pure anger on his face moments before the collision on Sarsfield Road.
The Citroen came to rest on its side. Two brothers freed themselves but a third was trapped. He instantly felt a stabbing pain in his back, was found to have two spinal fractures and was off work for four months, suffering mentally as a result of the ordeal.
Deakin, who had since clocked up separate convictions for harassment and stalking, admitted a offence of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.
The court heard he could recall little of the motoring offence. When arrested, he told an officer: “I only rammed him because I’ve already been leathered and I didn’t mean to hit him.”
Defence solicitor Jeff Smith conceded the incident “could have been far more serious”.
Judge Nicholas Barker imposed a 30-month jail term as he passed sentence today. Deakin, of Iredale Crescent, Workington, must also serve a two-year driving ban when released from custody and pass an extended retest.
