Police are appealing for witnesses after a special letters to heaven postbox was damaged in Workington.

The postbox is in the reflective garden in Vulcan Park and is thought to have been damaged some time over the past 14 days.

It was installed by Workington Town Council in November to help families grieve by giving them a chance to write letters to loved ones.

In a statement on social media, the town council said: “Over the last few weeks we have had numerous break-ins at our allotment sites and storage units in Vulcan Park with machines and tools stolen.

“Staff have also come to work to find nearby residents car windows smashed.

“And now this… our letters to heaven postbox has been senselessly vandalised.

“The mayor, councillors and officers of Workington Town Council work tirelessly every day to try and make Workington a better place to live and at the moment we are making daily phone calls to the police.

“What is wrong with people and what is happening to our town?”

The town council posted on social media today, February 27, that the postbox had been fixed and was reinstalled, thanks to the estates team.

Anyone with information relating to the incident can report online at www.cumbria.police.uk/report-it , quoting incident number 199 of 22 February. Or call 101.

Alternatively you can contact Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
