Work progresses on Maryport’s Bakehouse

Contractors are on site at Maryport’s former Bakehouse this weekend in a bid to complete work as soon as possible.

A fire at the Senhouse Street property in February last year resulted in the mid-terrace building having to be made safe.

The initial work was carried out by Workington-based contractor Stobbarts Ltd, on behalf of Cumberland Council, but any further repairs were the responsibility of the owner.

However, no action was taken and a court order was obtained by the authority which sets out the requirements and timeframes for work to be completed, but the owners failed to comply with the order’s terms.

Cumberland Council had to step in to carry out the work and it will bill the owner for it.

Stobbarts Ltd moved back on to the site earlier this week and the work it needs to do means the road has to be closed.

The work links in with the current road closure for the ongoing Senhouse Street improvements with an additional week extension to make sure the building work is completed.

It is likely to take two weeks and will make the structure safe including the removal of debris from the previous collapses of the building as a result of the fire damage.

Stobbarts Ltd workers have been on the site today, Saturday March 16, to make sure it can carry out the work as quickly as possible to minimise disruption to the town’s main shopping street. Work is also due to carry on tomorrow
