Nuclear firm backs Egremont’s Calderwood House

A leading nuclear supply chain firm has thrown its support behind a local homeless shelter in Egremont.

Bechtel Cavendish Nuclear Solutions opened new offices in Bigrigg, near Egremont, last year and pledged to sponsor a room in 2024 at Calderwood House in Egremont town centre, run by Time To Change West Cumbria.

Bechtel is in a joint venture on Sellafield with Cavendish Nuclear, and as Bechtel Cavendish Nuclear Solutions they work together on social value and community initiatives.

The sponsorship provides a room over the head of a vulnerable homeless person who comes to Calderwood House for the next 12 months.

This includes hot water, warmth, bedding, toiletries, food, and a safe space to call their own. Residents of the shelter are supported to get their lives back on track, developing skills and preparing them for a life off the streets.

Project management graduate at Bechtel Cavendish Nuclear Solutions, Isobel Shannon said: “During my first visit to Calderwood house I could immediately see the vital work they are doing there and how hard they work to support their residents.

“Hearing the stories of those who stay at the hostel made me sure that this was a project on our doorstep that we wanted to support, and we are honoured to do so. We look forward to continuing our work with Calderwood House.”

The room that Bechtel alongside their joint venture partner Cavendish Nuclear has sponsored is currently occupied by ex-veteran Shaun, who is grateful for a safe and comfortable room at Calderwood House.

Shaun said: “I wouldn’t know what to do without the sponsors who support Calderwood House. It’s very hard to be an ex-veteran, especially when coming out of service and becoming homeless. This service has been a lifeline to me and others like me and it’s nice to know that people care and want to help.”

Rachel Holliday, CEO and founder of Time To Change and Calderwood House said: “Room sponsors make a world of difference to people like Shaun and our other residents. It keeps them off the streets and in a safe, caring environment with everything they need to stay comfortable and get back on their feet.

“Having the support of Bechtel Cavendish Nuclear Solutions and our other room sponsors is incredible and shows just how important the community is, especially in our local area.”
