Uppies and Downies 2024: Uppies take first blood in Workington’s mass football game

The first game in the 2024 series of Workington’s Uppies and Downies was won by the Uppies.

The Good Friday game, which started at 6.30pm on The Cloffocks, was over in less than two hours.

Most of the game’s action took place on the Black Path – until the ball was smuggled out of the scrum and whisked away to Workington Hall by the Uppies.

John Irving was the hailer, who reached the gates of the hall surrounded by cries of ‘You’ll never take the Curwen’.

This year’s series could turn into a grudge match as Downies are still smarting from a whitewash in 2023.

The next game is on Tuesday, and it starts at 6.30pm at The Cloffocks.
