It’s been a stop-start opening to life back in the Championship for Workington Comets.
They have raced back-to-back matches with Berwick Bandits in between two postponed meetings with Scunthorpe Scorpions.
With the unsettled weather persisting the Comets are just hoping to get another meeting under their belts on Friday night when they visit Redcar Bears.
It will be a reunion with former rider Charles Wright who has started the season in top form with both Redcar and Oxford.
Wright had been lined up to guest for the Comets at home to Berwick in the second leg of the Border Trophy if Craig Cook had been forced to drop out.
The Comets skipper had suffered a thumb injury in the previous night’s meeting at Shielfield and at one point it looked unlikely he would be able to ride.
But the West Cumbrian rode through the pain barrier and worked hard in the pits with the rest of the team to earn high praise from manager James Denham for his captaincy and leadership.
Workington promoter Andrew Bain says there were plenty of encouraging signs both on and off track from their opening Border Trophy clashes with Berwick, especially at home.
They lost by 22 points at Berwick and by just four points at Northside as Berwick went away with the trophy.
He said: “There was some really good racing from members of our exciting new team. The riders are starting to get dialled in and you can see already how they are coming on.
“Apart from the disappointing result it was a brilliant day overall in fantastic weather, after some very hard work behind the scenes from everybody involved.
“It was good to see a great turnout and tremendous to see so many people coming through the turnstiles, including fans of several other clubs who chose to spend their afternoon with us.”
Bain will stand-in as team manager on Friday as Denham is unavailable and will go with the same riding order as the Berwick home line-up – 1, Craig Cook; 2, Tate Zischke; 3, Antti Vuolas; 4, Troy Batchelor; 5, Claus Vissing; 6, Sam McGurk; 7, Celina Liebmann.
