Man critically injured in early hours attack

A man has been critically injured in an early hours attack in West Cumbria.

The incident happened in Whitehaven in the early hours of Sunday.

Police were contacted at around 3.10am following the incident on George Street.

The injured man, in his 30s, was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle. He remains there today in a critical but stable condition.

Police arrested three men following the incident. Two of those men were released with no further action yesterday, April 15.

Liam McConnell, 29, of no fixed address, has been charged today, April 16, with GBH with intent. He is currently remanded prior to appearing before Workington Magistrates’ Court later today.

Police said they were keen to hear from anyone who saw the incident in the early hours of Sunday and was yet to come forward.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact police quoting incident number 34 of 14 April.
