Whitehaven produced a stirling performance at York City Knights to record their first away win of the season, by a comfortable margin of 36-16.
Haven had completed the double over York last year and are now in pole position to complete the feat later in the season.
An outstanding first-half effort from Jonty Gorley’s men saw them lead 26-0 at the break and they even stretched that advantage to 36-0 with half an hour to go.
The fact that York scored all of their 16 points in the last 17 minutes might have been down to Haven taking their foot off the gas with the game virtually won.
They went in front after only five minutes when the ball was moved smartly wide for Edene Gebbie to cross in the corner and Jake Carter landed the extras from the touchline.
Probably expecting a tighter game than eventually emerged Carter added two more points from a penalty in the tenth minute.
After seeing-off a spell of York pressure Town scored again on 15 minutes when a grubber from Jamie Doran hit a defender and bounced kindly for Guy Graham to go over under the sticks. Carter converted.
York were close to reducing the arrears before Haven scored again on 27 minutes. This time it was Ryan King who drove over from dummy half and again Carter was successful.
Gebbie went the length of the field on 38 minutes only to see his pass to supporting Jake Maizen go astray. However, the Cumbrians did score again before the hooter as Rio Corkill broke the York line to score and the faultless Carter added another goal.
Three minutes into the second-half Whitehaven scored again. Maizen found Joey Romeo with a cut-out pass and he scored out wide after cutting back inside. Carter had his first failure with the kick.
Whitehaven continued to press and Lachlan Hanneghan went in for the sixth try on 50 minutes with Carter adding the conversion.
York did not trouble the scoreboard until the 63rd minute when Joe Brown scored a try which was converted by Will Dagger.
Five minutes later they went in again when Dagger gave Jimmyn Keinhorst a run at the line down the left edge. Dagger converted from the touchline.
The final try of the game on the 73rd minute saw Dagger sent Tom Lineham over in the corner, but the conversion failed.
