Armed police called after reports of gunman in Carlisle

A man has been arrested after people reported seeing a gunman in Carlisle.

Police were contacted at around 9.30am yesterday, Wednesday May 15, with reports that there was a man with a firearm in a premises on St Nicholas Gate Retail Park.

Firearms officers were deployed and detained the man. Two cordons were put place near the Lanes Shopping Centre and Crosby Street.

The public may see an increased police presence in Carlisle town centre while enquiries are being carried out, Cumbria Constabulary said and added there was no wider risk to the public.

In a statement released today, police said the man had been charged with misuse of 999.

Ben Addison, aged 26, of Melbourne Road, Carlisle, was charged last night by detectives and has been remanded. He is due to appear before Carlisle Magistrates Court today, Thursday May 16.

A police spokesman said: “From further enquires carried out it has been established that the individual never had access to a firearm and there was no firearm involved in the incident yesterday.”
