Cockermouth Titans became the first team to beat Wath Brow A in the Holmen Iggesund Cumberland ARL.

The Titans beat a young Wath Brow side 22-18 after the two sides had been locked together at 10-10 when they took their half-time break.

The Cockermouth tries came from Regan Tinnion (2), Frazer Murray and player coach Liam McAvoy who was named man of the match. Tinnion kicked three goals.

For Wath Brow there were tries for Layton Dockwray (2), Luke Davison and Evan Alick. Matt Sibbald kicked one conversion. Brad White was their man of the match.

Coach McAvoy said of his side’s performance – “I was really pleased with the way we kept going and dug in. We have had a couple of big wins but this time we had to stick at it and apart from a couple of lapses I thought we defended really well.

“Both sides were missing players but the young ones who came in for Wath Brow were all good which is a credit to their club.

“The game had gone to and fro with each of us leading and it was great from our point of view that we kept going to score a late winner.”

Wath Brow coach Paul Farrell said: “We were down to the last 15 players at the club who were available and that included six of our Under-18’s and myself at 43 years of age. I played for about an hour and I’m suffering today!

“Under the circumstances I was gutted that we didn’t get the two points because everyone was outstanding in adversity, particularly the Under-18’s who had played on Wednesday night. Two of them scored tries.

“The game fluctuated one way and the other but we were ahead six minutes from time when a little lapse of concentration put them in for what was the winning try.”

Kells A have been on a losing run but that ended with a very good 24-0 home win against Lowca after they had established a 10-0 lead at the break.

Man of the match Ashton Sice (3), Tyrone Dalton and Dylan Hurton scored the tries with Kieran Halcrow landing two goals.

The man of the match for Lowca was Xenden Callendar.

Kells coach Jonathan Wignall said: “After two defeats on the spin we put in a very good defensive performance to nil a dangerous Lowca side.

“The game was very much an arm wrestle with a lot of set-for-set plays between two good sets of forwards,

“Ashton Sice was outstanding and deserved his hat-trick but that said it was off the back of the platform laid by the forwards who played well.

“There are still things to work on but we are happy to get the win against a team that will be up at the top end of the table come the end of the season.”

It was tight between Ellenborough A and Askam was very close with the West Cumbrians emerging 16-14 winners in the end.

It was three tries apiece and the difference was two conversions from Josh Patterson against one from Lewis Stables.

The Ellenborough tries came from Leon Ackerley, Tyler Edger and Kian Dempsey with Askam countering through Joey Blowers, Jude McNamara and Luke McIntee.

The Askam coach Chris Broadley said: “It was a very even game between two well-matched sides and it was one of those which could have gone either way. There were some awful conditions at time but overall I’m disappointed that we didn’t get anything from the game.”

Distington A powered away in the second half to beat Flimby 36-6 after they had led 12-0 at the break.

In the end there were tries for man of the match Bailey Worthington (2), Ethan Black (2), Kelton Lynch, Kelvin Lynch and Jaiden Hewer. There were also four goals for Hewer.

Sam Fearon scored the Flimby try which was converted by Rhys Booty and Kieran Johnstone was their man of the match.

Ricky Morrison, the Flimby loose forward and driving force behind the club being revived this season, said: “It was a close first-half yet again, but some poor decisions cost us. Distington kept the pressure on and got the result in the end.

“Cody Petrie gave a solid account of himself and our old head Gary Steele kept our middle solid.”

Hensingham A were unable to raise a team to play Maryport.
