Celebrities will be among people holding a march against sewage pollution in the Lake District.
Comedians Steve Coogan and Lee Mack will be taking part in Save Windermere’s 1.5-mile march on June 29 and organisers have also invited national political leaders and Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer.
The march is a year after Save Windermere held a demonstration, attended by thousands of people.
The group wants United Utilities and others to stop sewage overflow being released into England’s largest lake. The campaigners say it is killing Windermere.
Save Windermere said: “Both Labour and Lib Dem leaders have voiced their support for the campaign’s efforts over the last few weeks, with Ed Davey meeting Save Windermere during his recent visit to Windermere and Keir Starmer writing an opinion piece voicing his fury at the treatment of this precious lake.”
The march will begin at 10am outside United Utilities Information Centre on 8 Crescent Road in Windermere and end at the lake shore on Glebe Road, Bowness.
At the end of the march, there will be speeches from Save Windermere and other notable guests with local candidate being given the opportunity to say a few
words.
The campaign group has recently released a 10-point plan for a sewage-free Windermere.
Matt Staniek, founder of Save Windermere, said: “Windermere has been exploited for decades – sewage has been dumped in its waters and a
useless regulator has failed to protect it.
“There has never been a more important time for Windermere. Now is our chance, we must secure a commitment from a new government that they will protect this incredible natural asset and ensure it’s future for the people of this country forever by stopping the sewage.”
