Plans to convert a unit in a business park to an independent school to provide specialist education provision have been revealed.

ABC Care and Education Ltd has submitted proposals to Westmorland and Furness Council to convert unit four at Kirkby Lonsdale Business Park off Kendal Road into an independent school to provide one-to-one education for up to four children.

According to plans, although the school will be privately run, all children will be referred to the school via the local authority based on their needs.

Plans add the school will run largely as per a typical school however there will be a closer one-to-one teaching process that allows the students to be able to get additional support and time to focus on their understanding.

The application said: “There is a clear and demonstrable need for the proposed use which has been discussed with the local authority.

“The scheme will provide specialist education provision for children who need additional help and support on a closer one to one basis that this facility can provide, over and above what is provided in a traditional school.”

Planning documents said children would be supported by the staff members at all times and will not be unsupervised during breaks and lunch.

Breaks would largely take place within the building and pupils would not be allowed off site unaccompanied.

The application is currently undergoing public consultation.
