A competitions company with a twist wants to make your day – and put a little extra cash in your pocket for free.

Lake District Giveaways has become a Cumbrian sensation thanks to a unique way it gives away cash.

As well as competitions people can enter by buying a ticket, it does actually give away cash – and has hit upon a unique idea that has caught the imagination of thousands of people.

The firm, run by Tom Dadley, of Hackthorpe; Michael Nowak, of Appleby; and Alex Hankin, who grew up in Penrith, hides cash in out-of-the-way places across Cumbria – then drops clues on its socials to help people find it.

Tom said: “We’ve been blown away by the response to the cash drops – the amount of people taking part is amazing. We’ve had lots of good reaction from people too – even if they haven’t won the money, they’ve enjoyed getting out.”

The team have been doing cash drops of between £20 and £100 for a while right across Cumbria but this week, they hid £1,000 – and it was found by Charlie Ogden, of Calthwaite.

Tom added: “It’s nice to do something like this for people. Yes, we have the ticketed competitions but it’s great to put a smile on someone’s face with free cash. We also do things like pay for people’s petrol.

“One of our winners ended up with a free holiday to New York because we asked people on our socials where they would like to go – and she replied and was chosen.”

In just over 12 months, the company has paid out £1.7 million-worth of prizes in competitions and £100,000 in free cash giveaways. “It’s just nice to make a difference,” added Tom.

Tom said he was having to use other people’s vehicles when he’s hidden the cash – as people are getting to recognise his car.

He said: “We’re having to be a bit more sneaky, which is also fun. We think we’re the only competitions company doing this – and the more popular we become, the more we can do, so we’d say to everyone watch this space – we can only get bigger!”
