Damage on Honister Pass

A Lake District pass has had emergency traffic restrictions imposed after damage was discovered.

A routine inspection of Honister Pass revealed damage to culvert, prompting highways officials to introduce the temporary measures.

Effective immediately, the measures will include speed and weight restrictions to ensure the safety of all road users.

Cumberland Council said: “The location, between Honister Slate Mine Visitors’ Centre and Seatoller village on Honister Pass is particularly busy during this peak holiday season, and we recognise its importance to both local residents and visitors and so aim to minimise disruption.

“The damage required prompt action to prevent further deterioration and to maintain the structural integrity of the road.”

The following traffic restrictions will be in place until further notice in the immediate area surrounding the culvert:

  • Temporary speed limit of 10mph
  • Weight restriction of 20 tonnes are prohibited from using the area surrounding the culvert.
  • Large vehicles and HGV’s are advised to not use Honister pass or if unavoidable, access the area via the Buttermere side of Honister Pass.

Cumberland Council added: “We apologise for any inconvenience these measures may cause and appreciate the public’s co-operation and understanding. Further work will be required to implement a permanent solution.

“We encourage road users to plan their journeys accordingly and to consider alternative routes where possible.”
