A section of the A595 will be closed overnight for up to six weeks for road improvements to take place.
The road will close from Monday, August 5 between 7pm and 5am as contractors improve the stretch between Calder Bridge and New Mill.
Contractor DSD Construction Limited is carrying out the work, part of a £14.3m Government-funded programme.
The work at Calder Bridge will include road network repairs, drainage replacement, traffic sign replacements and refreshing of road markings.
From Monday, August 5, the work will be carried out in two separate phases.
The road will be closed between 7pm and 5am Monday to Saturday. It will reopen every Saturday morning from 7am until Monday 7pm, but traffic lights may occasionally be in use.
Two-way traffic lights will operate between 5am and 7pm Monday to Friday.
- Phase 1 will start on Monday August 5, and will last for two weeks, covering the stretch from Pelham House to the Stanley Arms.
- Phase 2 will start on Monday August 19, and continue for up to four weeks. This phase will focus on the section of road from the Stanley Arms to New Mill Farm.
During the night-time road closure, from 7pm to 10pm, vehicles can travel through the site with escort assistance, though delays of up to 30 minutes may occur. From 10pm to 5am, the road will be fully closed with no public access.
There will be no work taking place during the bank holiday on Monday August 26.
Access for emergency vehicles, under blue lights, and access for pedestrians will be maintained, at all times.
Cumberland Council said: “We acknowledge that this project may cause some inconvenience to road users, especially since the A595 is a major road.
“However, the council is working with local stakeholders, including parish councils and local members, to minimise the disruption as much as possible.
“Cumberland Council wishes to thank the community for their continued support and patience while they improve the road network and apologise for any inconvenience.”
