Workington Reds have missed out on another signing – because he didn’t fancy the travelling.
Reds boss Mark Fell, as many before him, is finding that geographical position affects recruitment with many players reluctant to make the regular trips to West Cumbria.
The latest to reject a move to Borough Park is 20-year-old Michael Ndiweni, just released by Newcastle United after coming all the way through their youth and Academy set-ups.
He was at Borough Park training with the rest of the squad on Tuesday in the open session enjoyed by a number of Workington supporters.
Fell expected his answer yesterday and unfortunately, when it came it was a no and again voiced reluctance over the travelling.
“It’s disappointing, but it’s on to the next one,” said Fell, who had another target he was trying to get in before Saturday’s opener against Guiseley.
Ndiweni actually made his full Newcastle debut last season, coming on as a substitute against Chelsea and he was also on the bench for the Champions League clash with PSG.
At the back end of the season he went on loan to Annan Athletic and played 15 games, scoring two goals.
Born in the north east at Throckley, he has Zimbabwean heritage. His brother Ryan is also part of the academy at Newcastle and his father works as a football coach in Newcastle.
Apparently he has already had trials with Blyth, Gateshead and Darlington.
Fell had said at the training session he had nine of his starting eleven picked in his mind and was waiting for two others – presumably Ndiweni as one plus one more.
