Holmen Iggesund Cumberland League Premier Division leaders Wath Brow A beat Lowca 30-22 last night.
But the young, enthusiastic Lowca side made the Hornets work hard for the victory after they had established a 20-0 half time lead.
Lowca won the second-half 22-10 after coming back into the game very strongly.
Hornets coach Paul Farrell said: “It was a near perfect first-half. We completed well and scored some nice trie to build-up a good lead.
“But second-half we made some changes and it was a bit disjointed. I take my hat off to Lowca, though, they kept coming and coming at us and never gave up.”
The Brow had gone in front after only five minutes with a try from Rhomen Alick and followed up six minutes later with second try from Callum Corey which Jenson Olstrum converted.
Luke Spivey was in on 19 minutes for an unconverted try and the first half scoring was completed on 23 minutes when skipper Luke Davison cross and Olstrum added the conversion.
A minute into the second-half man of the match Jordan Allen scored a try for Lowca which Keith Campbell converted but two minutes later Corey scored his second try for the Brow and Olstrum added the extras.
Allen got his second try for Lowca on 56 minutes and again Campbell converted but Mark Miller’s try on 62 minutes seemed to have settled it for the Brow.
Battling Lowca weren’t finished, though, and they scored twice in the last six minutes through Xenden Callender and Emerson Allen, with the last one converted by Campbell to end the game.
In the First Division Aspatria Hornets will take-over Egremont A’s fixture instead of competing in the Premier Division.
They should have played Hensingham A this week-end but unfortunately the Copeland side can’t raise a team.
The Hornets have a free week-end like everybody else for the Bank Holiday and then face away games at Ellenborough and Flimby followed by Distington A at home.
There’s also an important fund-raiser in the club headquarters tonight and chairman Mark Ridley has emphasised its importance.
“We are looking for as many as possible to support tonight’s race night.
“This isn’t your usual race night and was enjoyed by everyone last year.
“Despite our difficulties over the last few weeks we still have a Cup final to aim for. Our juniors have had a tremendous season and events like this are vital for our ongoing success.”
Spare a thought for Askam who have no game this week-end because Ellenborough A could not raise a side.
They haven’t had a fixture since July 20 and the next one is not until August 31.
It’s a shame for the League new boys who have earned a reputation for the most welcoming of clubs with visitors enjoying excellent hospitality.
The only game this afternoon is at Flimby where the Vikings entertain Distington A.
Ricky Morrison, the Flimby coach said: “We are looking forward to the game the table leaders and are expecting a big crowd down.
“We have invited past players to the game and then onto the club for entertainment afterwards.
“It’s that time of the year so we have seven lads away on holiday and others at work, but still have 22 players available.
“We are expecting a strong side, from Distingtpon who will be particularly well drilled but our lads have trained hard and are ready for the game.”
Distington are also affected by holidays, but also by call-ups to the National Conference team for its game at Leigh East.
