Egremont Greggs store set to move and expand

Greggs is planning to move and expand its bakery in Egremont.

The chain has applied for planning permission to convert the former McColl’s store, on Main Street, into a new, larger bakery

It plans to move out of its current store, situated across the road near the town’s post office, to the new premises.

McColl’s, which also housed the old post office, has been vacant since the convenience store fell into administration in 2022.

Greggs has now lodged a planning application with Cumberland Council for a new shopfront and signs and the replacement of window frames, the existing entrance door and the addition of new air conditioning condensers and extract grilles at the vacant store.

It is believed the new store will open in October and will include up to 25 seats for customers.

Due to the shop’s poor condition Greggs said it has to replace the store’s current window frames.

It also plans to replace the existing door to be Disability Discrimination Act compliant and is planning to replace the door with a window and replace the left hand window with a new doorway.

The new entrance will be level with the pavement, and provide adequate provision for access for the disabled.

While the shop is in the Egremont Conservation Area, the firm has said its proposed development is sympathetic to this and will improve the appearance of the vacant shop.
