A man died after his car collided with a falling tree on a South Cumbrian road.
Details of the incident emerged as an inquest into the death of 57-year-old James Douglas Lowe — known as Douglas, Doogie or Doug — was formally opened at Cockermouth Coroners’ Court this morning.
Area coroner for Cumbria, Kirsty Gomersal, said Mr Lowe, of Warrington, had been travelling south on the A683 near Sedbergh when tragedy struck in the area of Brantwood, Cautley, on August 20.
“They saw a tree falling across the road,” noted Ms Gomersal. “Mr Lowe was unable to avoid a collision and there was an impact between the car and the tree.”
Mr Lowe’s death was confirmed by paramedics at 6.10pm. A statement confirming identity had been provided by his son.
A post mortem investigation had been carried out and the coroner said she was offered a cause of death consistent with County Durham-born Mr Lowe being struck by a tree falling on his car.
“Given the cause and circumstances of Mr Lowe’s death I am satisfied that an inquest is required,” said Ms Gomersal.
She noted that Mr Lowe was married and that his last occupation was as that of business owner. “It goes without saying that Mr Lowe’s family and friends have my deepest condolences on his passing,” added the coroner.
“In order that further enquiries can be made into Mr Lowe’s death, I am now formally adjourning his inquest until a provisional conclusion date of January 21 2025.
