New car park rules will come into force at Carlisle’s Cumberland Infirmary this week.
Automatic number plate recognition goes live tomorrow, Wednesday, in car parks A1, B and C.
Visitors will no longer need to collect a ticket or pay and display on arrival, they can park their car in any available space and make their way to the main hospital.
The system automatically reads number plates when vehicles enter the car park.
Payment is taken when people leave the car park.
You can:
- Put your number plate into the payment machine found at the car park. The system will find you and will know how long you have parked for and charge you accordingly. You can pay using cash or cards.
- Express pay: you can pay by using your phone to scan a QR code and following the prompts
- Download the app and use autopay. This allows you to pay for your parking at your convenience. You can pay when you get home or back to the office.
North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust, which runs the hospital, said: “We hope that the introduction of ANPR will be easier for patients and visitors.

“It should take away the added pressure of queuing for a ticket and not knowing how long you are going to be at the hospital for. Additional staff will be on hand to support patients and visitors as the new system goes live. We are grateful for everyone’s support and patience as we improve our car parking arrangements.”
Blue badge holders can park in any space in these car parks, but will need to validate their visit at the Mitie reception desk in the atrium. There is no requirement to then take it back to their car to display.
If blue badge holders are parking outside of these areas, they will not need to validate their parking and just display it as normal.
