Two Cumbrian town centres will undergo a deep clean by Cumberland Council.

Brampton and Cockermouth have been chosen for the deep clean and the work will take around a week in each town.

The deep clean will start in Cockermouth on Monday, September 16, and in Brampton on Monday September 23.

The council said the focus was to enhance the cleanliness and appearance of key streets in the town centre, creating a more welcoming environment.

The cleaning will focus on the following areas:

Cockermouth town centre

  • Main Street from Sullart Street to Station Street
  • Station Street (to traffic lights)
  • Market Place

Brampton town centre

  • Front Street (Gelt Road to start of Craw Hall)
  • Market Place
  • High Cross Street (following the completion of roadworks)
  • Main Street (outside shops)

The council said the street cleaning team will be using specialist equipment, including jet washers and mechanical sweepers, to remove chewing gum, ingrained dirt, and other debris from pavements and pedestrian areas.

To minimise disruption to the public and local businesses, the work will be carefully managed with appropriate traffic control measures in place, it said. Special attention will also be given to market days to ensure minimal inconvenience.

The cleaning will be carried out in sections, allowing teams to inspect and tidy each area thoroughly before moving to the next.

As jet washing can create spray, especially near shop fronts, and the team will be taking extra precautions to maintain the cleanliness of frontages, Cumberland Council said.
