Whitehaven captain James Newton is on a long road to recovery after shattering his neck during the game with Halifax.
He was taken to hospital via ambulance during Sunday’s clash.
He fractured his vertebrae and has undergone surgery.
Newton posted an update on social media saying: “I’ve undergone surgery for the application of halo ring and vest. I will have the halo on for around eight weeks. I am doing well. Long road to recovery now, thanks for all of your support.”
Whitehaven Rugby League said: All of our thoughts at Whitehaven Rugby League are with our captain, his family and loved ones at this time.”
An online fundraiser has been created by Lee Butterworth to help raise money for Newton as he will be off work during his recovery.
