Lakes College staff and students have been inspired by street artist Banksy as a new mural appeared on a wall at the Lillyhall campus.
It is the first in a series of pieces designed to reflect the college’s core values of being ready, respectful, and showcasing potential.
The mural shows two seagulls around a bin, eating chips that have been scattered on the ground. Above the scene are the words Don’t Feed the Birds, drawing attention to the issue of littering and personal responsibility.
The idea behind the murals came after Banksy made headlines again over the summer.
The college saw it as a chance to connect with students in a creative way, bringing the values of the college into every day conversations.
Iain Glendinning, vice principal at Lakes College, said: “The project Banksy, being run by our art team and students, is a really positive and fun way to reinforce the college values.
“Rather than having posters and displays saying ‘don’t do this’ or ‘don’t do that’, we are using the art to encourage students to think about the message and relate it to their own choices in being ready for learning and work, respectful to themselves, others and their environment, and ultimately realising their potential.
“At the same time, our art students are learning valuable techniques and seeing the impact that art can have in the community and for individuals.
“I believe that art should be thought provoking, and that education is about developing people, not controlling them. This project delivers on both fronts.”
