The A66 has reopened today, Monday November 4.

The road has been closed since around 5am on Saturday November 2 after a HGV overturned and spilt a significant amount of fuel.

The road is closed in both directions between the A591 at Keswick and the A5091 at Troutbeck.

The fuel tanker overturned and left the carriageway, coming to rest down an embankment.

It was initially predicted the road would be open in the early hours of today but National Highways said earlier today that it could take at least a day for an extensive repair and resurfacing operation.

Cumbria police, Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service, North West Ambulance Service and the Environment Agency have all been at scene alongside National Highways area team crews.

National Highways added: “Recovery was protracted due to the complicated nature as a result of the location and a significant fuel spillage from the incident.

“Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service and specialist recovery teams worked at the scene to lift the vehicle from the embankment.”
