Workers at the Sellafield plant stole a large amount of items from its shop and food counter during a recent emergency exercise.

The exercise took place on Tuesday, November 12. During the scheduled exercise, staff are expected to evacuate their working area and shelter elsewhere.

During this period, some people went to the facility and took items without paying for them.

Sellafield Ltd although it was clear it was a small minority of people, it added: “This was an upsetting experience for those who work in this facility who returned to find this, and for others who now feel they can’t trust their colleagues.”

A Sellafield spokesman said: “We are investigating this further and reviewing arrangements for use of the canteen and shop during site emergency exercises.

“We have also referred the matter to the Civil Nuclear Constabulary and Cumbria police.”
