Cumbrian haulage firm founder Eddie Stobart has died aged 95.
His family announced today that Mr Stobart died on November 25.
The company was founded in 1946 and worked for farms and distributed fertiliser. In the 1970s, it expanded into becoming a logistics company focusing on road haulage, rail freight, and deep sea transport.
In 1960, Mr Stobart bought his first lorry second-hand from the local garage, and had it repainted in post office red and Brunswick green.
The firm became iconic due to the HGVs – each of which was given a name.
The firm’s first three trucks were named Twiggy, after the 1960s model, Tammy Wynette, and Dolly Parton.
Mr Stobart was born in April 1929 in Cumbria. His family had a small holding at Hesket Newmarket.
He married Nora Boyd in 1951, and they had four children – Anne, John, Edward and William. In their later years, Nora and Eddie lived in Scotby.
