Lake District passes closed due to weather

Lake District passes have been closed to traffic due to icy conditions.

Cold Fell, Birker Fell, Hardknott Pass and Newlands Pass, Wrynose Pass and Hardknott Pass are closed.

People are urged to drive with care, especially on minor untreated roads and are encouraged to avoid mountain passes where possible.

A multiple-vehicle collision has been reported to have happened on Wyrenose Pass today, January 4, and police are now looking to physically close the road to traffic.

An amber weather warning for snow and a yellow weather warning for ice have been issued by the Met Office.

Gritting crews across Cumbria have been out treating the network in preparation for sub zero road temperatures.
