An ambitious project has been launched to transform Workington’s Carnegie into a cultural hub for West Cumbria.
Carnegie Reimagined – Building a Creative Future will revitalise the Finkle Street building say trustees.
A new interim executive director has been appointed to help lead the strategy.
Becca Muir joins the trust in the role. She has a wealth of experience, the trust, said, including 10 years as a senior leader at organisations such as Theatre by the Lake, the Octagon Theatre Bolton, and Tate Liverpool.
The trust added: “While this marks her first role as an Executive Director, her experience in strategic planning, fundraising, and audience development ensures she is well-placed to guide The Carnegie through this transformative period.”
Carnegie Reimagined – Building a Creative Future seeks to position The Carnegie as a vibrant, inclusive, and sustainable cultural hub.
It is hoped the initiative will allow The Carnegie to deliver exceptional opportunities for creativity, learning, and community connection while addressing critical challenges within West Cumbria.
The trust said: “The Carnegie continues to play a pivotal role at the heart of the West Cumbrian community.
“In 2024, over 25,000 visitors attended ticketed events, and countless others participated in classes, clubs, and community activities.
“The venue is a space where creativity thrives, talents are nurtured, and people of all ages come together to be inspired, learn new skills, and celebrate shared cultural experiences.
“This is one of several key steps the board are taking to strengthen the position of The Carnegie and ensure its continued success. While we are excited about the journey ahead, we are also realistic about the significant amount of work required to deliver Carnegie Reimagined.
“This includes not only implementing our vision but also obtaining the necessary funding and building robust partnerships.”
Trustees said they will be revealing more about Carnegie Reimagined and how it will create meaningful cultural, social, and economic impacts for West Cumbria in the coming weeks.
