Plans to turn the former Wilko store in Barrow into an entertainment venue has been given the go-ahead.

The Rack Shack currently operates in Whitehaven, in town centre premises previously occupied by B&M. It opened there in 2018.

The proposed Rack Shack in Barrow will offer a range of activities including English and American pool, a separate snooker room and smart interactive darts.

All areas will have a good view of at least one TV showing sport on Sky Sports, TNT Sports and terrestrial TV.

The Rack Shack said: “We aim to duplicate what we have done in Whitehaven at the next premises in Barrow.

“There will be a modern and stylish bar area with a seated area for customers just wanting to enjoy a drink and the atmosphere of the venue and may also add a couple of different activities.”

Westmorland and Furness Council approved the application yesterday, Wednesday February 5.

The Rack Shack said that once the ground floor area was successfully operating, it expected to start work on converting the first floor into a 10-pin bowling area, which will be focused more on families.

The company added: “Over the last six years we have overcome the significant impact of the Covid pandemic and associated lockdowns to continuously grow year on year to offer more and varied activities and we have learned what works with the general public.”

The Wilko store in Barrow shut its doors in September 2023, after the company went into administration.
