‘It’s nuts’: West Cumbrian pensioner’s breakfast stand against Donald Trump

A Whitehaven octogenarian is getting ready to fight the might of the USA when President Donald Trump imposes trade tariffs of 25% on Great Britain.

Today, April 1, 86-year-old Gerard McCarten aims to make his stand when he sits down for his breakfast each and every day until the tariffs are lifted.

His daily breakfast consists of Scott’s Old Fashioned Porridge, accompanied with two Brazil nuts from Bolivia, a walnut and seven hazelnuts from the USA.

Gerard said, “I know it may seem a meaningless protest but consider, in one year I will have not consumed 328g of hazelnuts and not consumed over 1kg of walnuts.

“President Trump considers us Brits and fellow Europeans as ‘free loaders’, hence the tariffs of 25% on some British goods.

“Well, if a million little people, who eat the same breakfast as myself, got behind my protest then we would make a serious dent in the nut exports from the USA of 2,300 metric tonnes of hazelnuts and 1,000 metric tonnes of walnuts in 12 months.”

He said he calculated the weights with a hazelnut sample of 20 and a walnut sample of five.
