Richard Jones

Tributes have been paid to a pillar of the West Cumbrian community, who has died aged 86.

Richard Jones, of Workington, dedicated his life to serving his community and was a prominent figure in civic and church life.

A town and Allerdale councillor, he served as Workington mayor in 2003, and was fiercely proud of serving his wards – while known as a quiet representative for the people, he stood his ground in council chambers on a number of occasions.

He represented the Conservative Party and had the respect of all members of all parties on the council at the time. In a tribute to Richard, a Labour Party member called him ‘dedicated’.

A teacher by profession, he taught at several local schools until he took early retirement in 1989.

He taught history and religious education at schools including Newlands, Overend and Moorclose.

He was a lay reader at St Michael’s Church and his family said he had kept every sermon he ever read since 1961.

He was also a member of amateur dramatic groups in the town, including Workington Playgoers, and was a secretary of the Conservative Club.

His family said: “Apart from his family, his great loves were the council, the church and the Cons Club.

“He was a really clever man and had three degrees in theology, history and teaching. He’s left a legacy for the town as he as involved in so much.”

He was also a member of the Workington in Bloom working group and the Workington & District Twinning Association.

Workington Town Council said: “The council is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Richard. Our thoughts are with his wife Margaret and all his family at this difficult time.”

The flag at Workington Town Hall is being flown at half mast.

He leaves his wife of 55 years, Margaret, daughters Rachel and Claire, son-in-laws Sean and Chris, nieces Lorraine and Gaynor, grandchildren Cameron and Brodie and great-grandchild Darcie.

His funeral will be held at St Michael’s Church, Workington, on Tuesday April 22 at 12.30pm, followed by Distington Hall Crematorium. Edgars have charge of the arrangements.
