Cumbria’s first Ultimate Touch Rugby Day welcomed 50 players to Ambleside’s Galava Park.
With teams from, Keswick, Kendal, Ulverston, and players Cumbria wide, there was also a player from Scotland taking part.
The event allowed mixed-sex and mixed-ability teams of 10 to play, which organisers said allowed everyone to connect and have a great time.
Referee was Ben King, who covered all the 14 minute games single-handedly.

In keeping with the spirit of the day, Ben also won the raffle’s star prize, a signed Tom Curry shirt.

The raffle, supported by many local businesses raised £600, plus a charity cake sale taking place at the event meant the total raised was £700.

All the money raised will be going to Ambleside’s Raise The Roof campaign. Fundraising will continue for this over the coming months.
Liz’s Country Kitchen provided pizzas at the event, which also attracted around 50 spectators.

Celebrations of Cumbria’s growing rugby network began with recognition for a number of players.

Awards included best drop goal for Nathan Robson and Best TRY for Nigel Aikinson, for using his years of rugby knowledge for being in the right place at the right time.

Event manager Clare Gelderd said: “It has brought me utter joy to compose and create a day that allowed everyone to have a bit of fun, alongside a streamlined memorable experience, but most importantly, successful.

“Ambleside’s secretary Jeanette Irwin, has already said this will be an event that will happen again at the club.

“The day was focused on grassroots rugby, encouraging people to give it a go and fundraising. If anyone wishes to donate to the growing fund please contact Ambleside Rugby Club.”
