A 3-1 defeat at South Moor has dented Windscale’s target of a top 6 finish in the Premier Division of the Wearside League.
South Moor playing down the slope on a lively surface took a two-goal advantage into the halftime interval.
Conor Randall notching the first in the 17th minute and James Blanchard 6 minutes later, both taking advantage of some sloppy Windscale defending.
The Atoms were much improved in the second period. Playing down the slope they reduced the arrears 12 minutes into the half.
Matty Pierce whipped in a cross from the left, Andrew Begbie lifting the ball over South Moor custodian Curtis Richardson into the back of the net.
South Moor regained their two-goal advantage in the 69th minute.
The hosts’ wide man Riley Smith ending a speedy run down the right and delivering a great cross to substitute Liam Orr who found the back of the goal despite the best efforts of Atoms keeper Fin Stephenson.
Windscale kept plugging away, their best effort by Lewis Selkirk in the 84th minute rattling back off the crossbar following a through ball from Harry Hodgson.
Matty Pierce, who was a thorn in the side of the hosts almost added to the Atoms tally late in the game.
Following a mazy run in the 85th minute, his progress was halted by a last ditch tackle, the resulting free kick coming to nothing.
With two minutes left to play Pierce again was prominent in an attack, his effort unfortunately for the Atoms only finding the side netting.
Probably on the day the right result.
Windscale have two away games left to conclude their season.
They travel midweek to Norton and Stockton Ancients on Wednesday and round off their fixture programme with a visit to Durham Corinthians next Saturday.
