The next phase of Carlisle’s Southern Gateway scheme is set to start next week.
Contractors will be on site at English Street for eight weeks from Monday, April 28, to enhance the pedestrian crossing area between The Cumberland Building Society, Santander, NatWest, and the former B&M site.
Work will take place Monday to Friday, from 7am to 5pm, excluding bank holidays.
English Street and Devonshire Street will be closed, affecting bus services 62, 64, and 69, which will be diverted in both directions.
Work includes the construction of a raised table at the junction of Victoria Viaduct and English Street, installation of ducts, upgraded traffic signals, new kerbs and paving, and improved pedestrian crossings.
The Southern Gateway project forms part of Cumberland Council’s £100m regeneration programme for Carlisle, supported by Government funding through the Future High Streets Fund, Town Deal and Borderlands Inclusive Growth Deal initiative.
Cumberland Council said: “These upgrades will build on the recent improvements to English Street and link with last year’s successful regeneration of Devonshire Street. The existing temporary tarmacadam will be replaced with a high-quality, permanent finish, helping to create a more attractive and accessible city centre.”
