Photo finish for hounds at St Helena

Photo finish in the pups with Maggie on the far side just getting up to take the win

Monday saw a return to St Helena for the final time with 51 hounds turning out.

Up first were the Seniors with 10 taking to the trail.

It was Mel for Les and Graham Reid, and Ellie Napier who was the early leader from James and Ava McClellan’s Countess Ava and Zeta for Stephen Irving and Caroline Graham in third.

On to the back fell, Mel had a slight lead on Cautious for Stephen Riley and Isla Hetherington, the pair had 50 yards on the third hound Baroness Ava for James and Ava McCllelan and Zeta in fourth.

Back in sight, Mel, Cautious and Baroness Ava had broken clear. Mel won by 20 yards to claim her second Senior win, Baroness Ava finished in second, getting a head of Cautious.

Pups saw a field of 12 lining up at the slip.

Miterdale Wow was leading the race ahead of Zoya for Stephen Irving and Caroline Graham with Minnie and Maggie for Les and Graham Reid, Erin Rowlandson, Barbara Jones and Steven Walker in third and fourth.

Back in sight and Maggie and Minnie were going well with Zoya in third and Miterdale Wow in fourth.

Onto the finish, Maggie and Zoya had established a slight lead and the judge had to refer to the camera as they were so close when they crossed the line.

The win was Maggie’s. Zoya finished in second and Minnie finished in third.

There were 17 hounds in the Open Maidens.

Miterdale Green Queen for Sophie Steele, and Jake and Zach Green had got a 50-yard lead on Hey Mac for Neil and Gillian Brown, and Derek and Joel Bullman.

Back in sight Hey Mac was leading the way ahead of Miterdale Green Queen and Miterdale Rumble.

On to the finish, Hey Mac took the win by 20 yards ahead of Miterdale Green Queen, Miterdale Rumble finished in third with a dead-heat for fourth with Ruby for Stephen Riley and Isla Hetherington and Dundee for Neil and Gillian Brown, and Derek and Joel Bullman with the judge unable to be separated the two dogs.

The final trail of the day was the All-In with 12 hounds being slipped.

On the back fell kennel mates Duchess Ava and Glamorous Ava were leading the race for James and Ava McCllelan, with Foxparke Sidekick in third.

Back in sight, Blue Striker for Brian and Erin Rowlandson, and Billy Birkett took the lead ahead of Foxparke Sidekick with Duchess Ava and Glamorous Ava in close pursuit

On to the finish Duchess Ava and Glamorous Ava battled it out well with Duchess Ava getting the win by a head from Glamorous Ava with Foxparke Sidekick in third and Blue Striker in fourt, Team Foxparke’s Foxparke Elliot’s Lad finished well in 5th. The final ticket of the day went to Stephen Irving and Caroline Graham’s Zola.

Hound trailing resumes today, Thursday April 24, at West Woodburn for Seniors, Pups, Open Maidens and All-In. Seniors slip at 5.30pm.

  • Open Maiden – 1. Hey Mac 2. Miterdale Green Queen 3. Miterdale Rumble 4. Dead Heat – Ruby and Dundee 6. Kinniside Bobby 17 ran, time 20.26
  • All In – 1. Duchess Ava 2. Glamorous Ava 3. Foxparke Sidekick 4. Blue Striker 5. Foxparke Elliot’s Lad 6. Zola 12 ran, time 20.24
