The final game of Windscale’s 2024/25 season saw them travel away for the fourth consecutive game.
Durham Corinthians currently sat in second place and seeking promotion to the Northern League were the Cumbrians opponents.
The game was played with high intensity throughout, Durham looking to secure that second place position with a much needed win and Windscale keen to make amends for some poor displays of late.
Corinthians’ direct approach was obvious from the outset with constant presence from their front three and balls being instantly launched forward for them to chase.
Windscale were more than in the game themselves creating some good opportunities through Hodgson and Jolly, the final pass just lacking quality at times.
Winnable were forced into an early substitution with Sempill coming off through injury and being replaced by Davidson.
On 23 minutes Fin Stephenson was required to make a great save from the Corinthians skipper. A few dangerous corners from Corinthians were dealt with well by the Atoms who were defending superbly when required.
Half time came and went and the second half continued in the same fashion. The game ebbed and flowed nicely, Corinthians continued to launch balls forward and use a long throw from either side of the pitch which meant Windscale had to win many aerial battles which they did to good effect.
Davidson and Jolly were combining well for the atoms with several opportunities to create something, again final balls were just lacking in quality.
Wordsworth had a speculative shot from distance and shortly after Fretwell danced round around players and flashed the ball across the six yard box but no one was on hand to tap in.
In the closing minutes Windscale were awarded a corner, Begbie headed towards goal only to be denied by the crossbar and in the follow up Jolly’s shot was sent over the bar.
The game ended 0-0 and Windscale can be pleased with their efforts against a strong Durham Corinthians side who will now play two cup finals in the coming week.
A strong end to a decent season for the Atoms with over 4,500 miles travelled.
