Work to revitalise Carlisle’s Market Hall and the Eden Centre are progressing.
Bearmont Group took over the lease of the Grade II-listed building in December and since then it, alongside owner Cumberland Council, has drawn up plans to breathe new life into the much-loved city centre site.
Work has already been completed successfully by Bearmont on the facade.
Local contractors have been used wherever possible, the council said, and its conservation team has worked closely with Bearmont to make sure that the hall’s historical features are retained and enhanced.
The work includes:
- Renewing original signs
- Restoring metalwork
- Repairing brickwork
- Replacing windows and doors
- Refreshing paintwork
- Replacing damaged roofing
Further work, to create new toilet blocks, is due to start soon.
Rob Lloyd, CEO of Bearmont Group, said: “We’re pleased to confirm that works across the Market Hall and Eden Centre continue to move forward in line with the phased regeneration plans.
“While site activity may appear quieter at present, that reflects the natural rhythm of the programme as we transition between key phases.
“We’re now preparing to commence phase four, which will see the development of new toilet blocks. Phase five will follow shortly after, as part of our ongoing commitment to revitalising the site.”
National retailer B&M is set to open a store in the former Wilko unit on May 30.

The 30,000sq ft space has stood empty after Wilko’s departure in 2023 following 24 years in the city.
Plans to create a food court and entertainment area in the market hall were approved in February.
Mr Lloyd added: “Units five and six in the arcade have now been let to local businesses previously based in the market.
“This move creates space for the upcoming improved communal seating area; an exciting and much-anticipated part of the redevelopment.”
