A group of young farmers aim to tackle all 214 Wainwrights in a day for the Motor Neurone Disease Association.
Raughton Head Young Farmers Club raised £26,767.77 for the association last year, in their Many Miles For MND Challenge.
They travelled the distance between John O’Groats and Lands End collectively as a club in a single day at the Recreation Centre in Dalston, near Carlisle.
This year, they are setting their sights higher. Dubbed Many Mountains for MND, this ambitious effort on July 27 will see current members, advisory staff, parents, and former members come together in a monumental show of community spirit and determination.
“This is a mammoth task,” said Kate Rowland from RHYFC. “But if there’s any group that can pull this off, it’s our incredible YFC family. Everyone is involved and motivated by our commitment to supporting those affected by MND.”
The team have been inspired to take on these challenges since local dairy farmer Richard Messenger was diagnosed with MND last year.
As a result the local community have rallied together to support the family and raise money to help to fight the disease.
Participants will track their progress using AllTrails, Strava, Fitbit, or Apple Watch and will capture proof of completion with a summit photo at each Wainwright.
Motor Neurone Disease is a condition that affects the brain and nerves, progressively damaging the cells that control muscle activity.
The association funds vital research and offers support and care to people living with the disease, as well as to their families and carers.
“This charity is very close to all of us at RHYFC,” Kate added. “We’re proud to continue raising both awareness and vital funds for such a worthy cause.”
