Thursday night saw a return to Cleamire, near Wigton, for the final time for a 4 grade meeting with 22 hounds turning out on the night.
The weather had improved a lot from last time and the Seniors were up first with six taking to the trail. Huntsman’s Rebel for Denise and Jenny Bland, and Graeme Little was sent off as the favourite.
Off to a good start was Huntsman’s Rebel as she went out straight away at the front ahead of Come Fly With Me for Duncan, Amy, Oliver and Eleanor Chisholm and Brian Graham.
The hounds passed the trail field after about five minutes of running and Huntsman’s Rebel had developed a 10-yard lead on Come Fly With Me with Minnie Million for Brian, Joy and Cathy Lister in third and Foxparke Beep Beep for Robyn, Ellie, Grace and Nicola Napier, and Brooke Butler in fourth.
By the time the hounds went out of sight Huntsman’s Rebel had pulled away from Come Fly With Me and Foxparke Beep Beep moved up to third.
The hounds then come back into sight through the bottom fields after crossing the road and Huntsman’s Rebel had established a 20-yard lead from Foxparke Beep Beep and Millie’s Lass for George McGimpsy, and Gillian and Millie Telford in third.
The hounds go out of sight as they go into the woods and when they came out, Foxparke Beep Beep had kicked on and developed a 20-yard lead ahead of Huntsman’s Rebel, Come Fly With Me and Thorn Soul for Martin, Molly, Joanna and Teddy Burrows, and Sarah Jackson.
As the hounds showed at the top of the finish Huntsman’s Rebel and Foxparke Beep Beep were neck and neck and both kept swapping at the front, as they began to drop down the finish Foxparke Beep Beep pulled away and came on to claim the win by 10 yards.
Huntsman’s Rebel finished in second with a small gap to Millie’s Lass and Thorn Soul in third and fourth and Minnie Million in fifth. The final ticket of the race went to Come Fly With Me.
Up next were the Pups with four taking to the trail. Huntsman’s Unite for Denise and Jenny Bland and Graeme Little was sent off as the favourite.
Brown Sugar for Graham and Les Reid, and Ellie Napier was off to a flying start ahead of Huntsman’s Unite with a small gap to litter mate Thorn Bee for Martin, Molly and Teddy Burrows and another small gap to Spring Gardener for Jenny Horn and Ronnie Ridley.
Brown Sugar pulled away throughout the trail and came on to claim the win (and lose his maiden status) by a minute. Huntsman’s Unite finished in secon and a small gap to Thorn Bee and another gap to Spring Gardener.
Up next were the Open Maidens with seven taking to the trail.Light Up for Christopher Henderson was sent off as the favourite.
Visibility had decreased as the night progressed but from what everyone could make out five had broken clear. Onto to the finish it was a close finish as last year’s pup Flecky Jack for Donna, Shaun, Luke and Becky Hetherington got up to claim the win by a head from Huntsman’s Quirk for Denise and Jenny Bland and Graeme Little, Light Up finished in third with Meadow Lane for Paul and Joanne Airey in fourth. Christine Brownless Maeve finished in fifth and the final ticket went to Paddy The Plasterer for Tanya Satterthwaite.
The final trail of the evening was the Open Restricted, Dream Catcher for Cathy, Brian and Joy Lister was sent off as the favourite.
The visibly had reduced even more by the time they went through the fell due to the heavy rain but as they showed onto the finish Dream Catcher won by a length from Malia for Christine Brownlee with Blue Striker in third for Brian and Erin Rowlandson and Billy Birkett to extend his lead in the Open Restricted Championship to 28 points, 4 points clear of his nearest rival Malfunction on 24 points. Swamp Fox for Tanya Satterthwaite finished in 4th and Millie’s Lad for George McGimpsy in fifth. The final ticket went to Sarah Whites Malfunction.
Hound racing resumes today Saturday June 14, for 2 meetings, Roman Wall Show; Seniors, Senior Maidens, Pups, Puppy Maidens, Open Restricted. Seniors slip at 11am and Greenholme Show; Seniors, Pups, Open Maidens, Open Restricted, Veterans. Seniors slip at 12.30pm.
