A £12 million takeover deal of Carlisle-headquartered Cubby Construction is complete.

The firm has been acquired by Cumbrian investment business Svella Plc as part of an investment to secure the future growth of the company.

Founded in 1968, Cubby Construction is a leading name in construction, civil engineering and joinery manufacture.

A respected business with a reputation for delivering high-quality projects, it currently operates throughout north west England and the Scottish Borders.

Svella Plc has a wealth of experience in developing businesses with significant growth potential, driven by operational improvement, an unwavering focus on financial performance, hands-on investment and proactive management.

It has extensive expertise and a successful track record of excelling across industry sectors which are aligned to, and complement, those in which Cubby Construction operates, helping unlock exciting growth opportunities.

Svella said: “At the heart of the strategy for growth is the formation of Cubby Group, a collaboration of 14 businesses with over 350 employees.

“It will offer expanded capabilities and expertise in new sectors including renewable energy, utilities, rail engineering and infrastructure – with Svella immediately adding live profitable contracts in these areas.

“Bolstered by Svella’s current operational network, Cubby Group will extend its geographical footprint across the North of England, Southern Scotland and the Midlands.

“Investment will help provide crucial working capital for future growth, asset purchases, acquisitions and to invest in people and skills to help drive its growth strategy.”

Capitalising on commercial opportunities across new sectors, and with the financial backing and industry expertise from Svella, Cubby Group is aiming to grow revenues to over £50 million by the end of May 2026, the firm said.

Andrew Tinkler, Svella Plc executive chairman, said: “The acquisition of Cubby Construction together with the £12 million investment fund earmarked to support the business will deliver stability and help enable our strategy for long-term growth.

“In addition, the formation of Cubby Group allows us to bring together complementary expertise and experience, with customers benefitting from an expanded service offering across new sectors, increased geographical presence and enhanced operational efficiencies.

“Our goal is to support the management teams with hands-on investment, operational improvement and a customer-centric approach to unlock the growth potential in the business. We’re looking forward to supporting the development of employees, helping them build long-term careers with Cubby Group and ensure they play an important role in shaping an exciting and successful future together.”

Cubby Group will encompass the following businesses: Cubby Construction, Cubby Civils, Cubby Joinery, Cubby Utilities, Cubby Plant Hire, Briscoe Construction, Finlaysons Contracts, Laidlaw Building, Laidlaw Scaffolding, Aberla Energy, Avidrail, Enviro Skip and Enviro Hire.

Cubby Group locations include: Carlisle, Jedburgh, Galashiels, Selkirk, Carnforth, Warrington, Chesterfield and Birmingham.
