Leo Group owner completes epic cycling challenge for MND research

Leo Group owner Danny Sawrij is riding high after completing his second extraordinary cycling challenge for the Doddie’5 Lions Challenge – Ireland.

The event saw 50 determined riders cover 555 miles in six days, all to raise vital funds for Motor Neuron Disease research.

The journey began in Belfast and took the team through the four provinces of Ireland, visiting the Origin Clubs of British & Irish Lions players.

The ride concluded in Dublin, where the team proudly delivered the match ball to the Aviva Stadium ahead of the historic 1888 Cup clash: The British & Irish Lions vs Argentina.

Danny is no stranger to a challenge. In 2023, he participated in Kenny Logan’s Rugby World Cup Challenge – a 700-mile walk and cycle from Edinburgh to Paris – aimed at raising £50,000 for the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation. Danny exceeded expectations, raising over £100,000 for MND in that effort alone.

The Doddie’5 Lions Challenge is inspired by the indomitable spirit of the late Doddie Weir OBE, a beloved rugby legend and close friend and neighbour of Danny’s.

Doddie, who earned 61 caps for Scotland and represented the British & Irish Lions, was diagnosed with MND in 2017. Later that year, he launched the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation, dedicated to supporting those affected by the disease and funding critical research.

Ahead of the event, Danny said: “As a friend and neighbour to Doddie, it is a true privilege to once again stand as a challenge partner and take part in this incredible journey.

“Doddie was unwavering in his dedication to finding a cure for MND, and now it is up to us to carry that torch forward. His legacy inspires us every day, and together, we will continue the fight he so passionately began.”

So far, Danny has raised £127,457 during his latest challenge. Altogether, the two challenges have brought in £1,220,000 for MND –  and donations are still coming in.

Danny added: “It’s humbling to have been part of such an incredible event. There were highs and lows along the way, but the thought of my dear friend pushed me to dig deep and keep going.

“I’m truly amazed by the support and generosity I’ve received, and I want to thank every one of you for your contributions.”
