Kendal Town got their season up and running last night with a fine 4-1 win at Marske United.
It was especially rewarding for Matt Flynn’s men after Saturday’s home defeat as it came from their longest mid-week journey of the season.
Two late goals cost them on Saturday when they slipped to a 3-1 home defeat watched by the Northern League’s second biggest attendance of 458.
But there were no slip-ups this time and the only significance of an 86th minute goal, the last of the game, was that it completed Josh Winder’s hat-trick.
Winder is a young player of whom much is expected this season and the goals underlined his potential.
The opener on 13 minutes had given the Mintcakes an early lead and there was still just a goal in it after a tight first-half.
But when he struck again two minutes into the second half it signalled a significant shift towards the visitors.
New skipper Bailey Kenny made it 3-0 on the hour and although Marske reduced the arrears on 75 minutes through Tyler Crosby it was Kendal who had the final word through Winder.
Afterwards John Walsh asked chairman Michael O’Neill – currently on holiday – to analyse his club’s chances for the season in view of the numerous changes at Parkside Road. You can listen below:
