Royal Victoria Hotel, Maryport

A derelict Maryport pub is set to be transformed into apartments.

The Royal Victoria in Maryport closed in 2020 and has been empty since then.

Now, Emporium Homes has been given the go-ahead by Cumberland Council to convert the building, on the corner of Crosby Street and John Street, into flats.

It wants to create six one-bedroom and two two-bedroom homes in the building’s first, second and third floors.

The development would include community and retail spaces on the ground floor, the company said.

A report to the council said: “The ground floor of the building was used as a pub until 2019, with the remaining floors above being unused since 2008.

“Unfortunately, due to poorly refurbishment effectuated in 2006, the building ceased the hotel room function at the floors above after only 18 months of function, remaining only with the pub being functional until 2020.”

According to the report the building has characteristics of Victorian architecture, likely with influences from the late 19th century.
