
People have the chance to meet the four-legged heroes of mountain rescue at an open day later this month.
People can meet the dogs and their handlers and find out how the dogs to learn to search for missing people out on the mountains through play at the event at the Kirkstone Pass top car park on August 17.
There will also be an opportunity to watch the dogs as they work across the hillside and meet the team’s dogsbodies, who go out and hide in all weathers to help train the dogs.
The event runs from 11am till 3pm at car park, opposite the inn.
Lake District Mountain Rescue Searchdogs is a specialist team that is dedicated to the training, developing and deployment of search dogs within the Lake District mountains and fells to search for missing and injured people.
All its handlers are operational members of mountain rescue teams in the Lake District and give up their free time to go out and help lost and injured people in the national park and further afield.
The team’s dog food sponsor Lakes Collection will also be at the open day to offer advice and guidance on dog nutrition and overall wellbeing and Cumbria police dogs in support of its charity, the Cumbria Police Dog Benevolent Fund which supports Cumbria police’s dog in their retirement.
Lake District Mountain Rescue Searchdogs is an entirely voluntary organisation and rely solely on the generosity of public donations.
