Seven weeks of roadworks are set to start in Workington today.

Northern Gas Networks is replacing ageing gas pipes with plastic ones on Annie Pit Lane, Solway Road and Derwent Road.

Contractors are due to move in today and the work is expected to take seven weeks to complete.

A lane closure will be in place on Annie Pit Lane from today, Monday August 4.

Once work on this section of the project is complete a single lane closure will be put in place on Solway Road, Northern Gas Networks said.

It added while the majority of the work will be carried out in the street, engineers will need to access homes and businesses to complete the project, and the team will be door knocking customers to inform them about the work and provide help and support including making arrangements to minimise disruption.

Dan Hind, operations lead for Northern Gas Networks, said: “We would like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused during these essential work.

“However, it is vital we complete them to continue to maintain a safe and reliable gas supply to the residents and business owners of Workington.

“Shops and businesses in the area will remain open as usual and we will be working hard to  complete this essential project as safely and as quickly as possible.”
