A Hollywood movie with scenes filmed in Kirkby Lonsdale is having a second lease of life by trending worldwide on Netflix.
Fantasy adventure film Dolittle, starring Robert Downey Jr and Tom Hollander, is currently ranked sixth on the streaming platform’s global charts across 45 countries and is one of the most-watched movies in the UK at the moment.
Kirkby Lonsdale featured in the 2020 movie, after being transformed into Victorian era Britain for a live-action chase sequence during filming in 2018.
The film’s stars were on location for three weeks to help tell the tale of the eccentric doctor who can talk to animals, including the appearance of a CGI giraffe, which leaps through Kirkby Lonsdale’s historic Market Square.
Kirkby Lonsdale Town Information & Gift Shop manager, Marie Batty, said: “The original filming of Dolittle generated great excitement at the time, as everyone was thrilled that Kirkby Lonsdale had been chosen as the backdrop to bring the fantastical and historical elements of this big budget movie to life.
“So it’s fantastic to see the film making an epic comeback on Netflix and becoming a streaming hit five years on!
“It obviously creates a great talking point, as visitors are always interested in Kirkby Lonsdale’s famous film, TV and literary links.
“After all, who wouldn’t want to visit and follow in the footsteps of a famous Hollywood actor? It’s definitely a topical conversation starter to highlight this hidden gem of a town nestled between the Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District.”
